The doghouses will also be judged by the public for the coveted title of ‘Best in Show’ (2nd and 3rd place will also be awarded). In addition, the winner will receive a line of BISSELL Commercial products valued at $750.00!

We Couldn’t Do it Without You!

Here at the BISSELL Pet Foundation, we are very thankful for the support we receive from donors near and far. There are many worthy causes to assist across the country, but we couldn’t lend a hand without the help of individuals who share our love of animals and want to make a difference for homeless pets. Recently, the special efforts of local supporters has helped us continue to advance our mission.

Gezon Motors, a local auto dealership celebrating 100 years of business in West Michigan, supported the BISSELL Pet Foundation by donating a portion of their sales during the month of August. In conjunction with this promotion, they hosted the Dog Days of Summer, a community event with all proceeds supporting the Foundation’s work.

Gezon Motors

On a picture-perfect August day, the staff at Gezon Motors welcomed 117 dogs and their owners to enjoy agility demonstrations, bobbing for doggie treats and a loudest bark contest for the four-legged attendees. Even German car maker, Volkswagen, in addition to many other local businesses, supplied raffle prizes and gift items that the four-legged and two-legged guests could enjoy. Team Gezon is a pack of pet lovers like us, and we were thrilled to join them for this fun-filled event to raise funds for animals in need.

We are also excited to receive support from another local community member who aims to raise awareness and funds for homeless pets in celebration of completing his 10th IRONMAN race. Jim Barron , a local doctor and fellow pet lover was moved by the mission of the BISSELL Pet Foundation and chose to support our good work. On November 18th, Jim will swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles, all in honor of homeless pets. Donations are still being accepted for his campaign. Anyone interested in helping Jim’s fundraising efforts can give at www.bissellpetfoundation.org/give and enter IRONMAN in the “make your gift in honor of field.” Best of Luck, Jim!

Since its inception in October 2011, the BISSELL Pet Foundation has supported over 40 animal welfare organizations in 16 states.

We aim to help even more pets in the months to come but can’t do it without the support from individuals like Jim Barron and the members of Team Gezon who share our passion for pets. If you also believe that innocent animals deserve a second chance and want to help provide hope to the lost, abandoned, neglected and abused pets of our country, please consider a donation to our Foundation or to your local shelters and rescues. If you cannot give financially, please consider volunteering your time at a shelter near you. Finally, if you cannot volunteer, please spread the word about our mission to help reduce the number of homeless pets. Together, we can create positive outcomes for shelter animals.

BISSELL Pet Foundation supports the Kent County Animal Shelter in
2012 ASPCA® Rachael Ray $100K Challenge

The BISSELL Pet Foundation™ (BPF) is proud to sponsor the Kent County Animal Shelter’s (KCAS) Kick-Off Party for the 2012 ASPCA®(American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. The party will kick off a three-month campaign to save pets in Kent County. KCAS joins 49 other shelters nationwide competing in the $100K Challenge.

On Saturday, Aug. 4, KCAS will open its doors with extended adoption hours for the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET (adoption applications will be accepted until 3 p.m.). In addition, the recent BISSELL Blocktail™ Grant of $41,000 awarded to KCAS by BPF has enabled special adoption fees for the event. Members of the community can adopt a cat for $5 or a dog for $50 plus the cost of a license.

On average, KCAS accepts 30 stray and unwanted pets on a daily basis. The event’s goal is to adopt at least as many animals in one day as they generally accept, by placing 30 or more animals into loving homes.

KCAS Program Supervisor, Carly Luttmann, is encouraging potential adopters to visit the shelter early to complete an application to be preapproved for adoption. The preapproval process will highly expedite the adoption process the day of the event. KCAS reminds the community to “think adoption first” and save the life of a homeless pet. Luttmann reiterated, “Our knowledgeable staff would love to help you find a pet that’s a great match for your family.”

In addition to adoption specials, the event will feature pizza from Giorgio’s Pizza beginning at 11 a.m., free pet demonstrations and the chance to win BISSELL floorcare products.

American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

KCAS ranked 27 of 108 shelters in the initial qualifying heat by obtaining the most online votes from community members. KCAS will enter the final stage of the Challenge, which runs from Aug.1 through Oct. 31, 2012, by competing to find homes for more cats and dogs during the same period in 2011. They hope to save at least 300 more lives during the Challenge to qualify for a portion of the $500,000 in prize grants up for grabs.

For more information on how to adopt from the Kent County Animal Shelter call (616) 632-7300. To learn more about the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, visit http://challenge.aspcapro.org/

2012 BISSELL Blocktail
Party® was the BEST
DOG-GONE Party Yet

Nearly 800 animal lovers, and their canine companions alike, attended the BISSELL Blocktail Party at Mangiamo! on Wednesday, June 13. A total of $187,000 was raised at the event, surpassing the fundraising goal of $150,000 that was set for its seventh year. Funds from the party benefited the new BISSELL Pet Foundation, which administered the proceeds to West Michigan animal welfare organizations in the form of BISSELL Blocktail™ Grants, along with a $10,000 gift that was allocated to “Party Partners” earlier in the year to thank them for their good work in the community.

The community really pulled together to make this our best year yet. We are overwhelmed with appreciation from the outpouring of support.

“The West Michigan community never fails to stand behind a great cause, and this event shows that we believe pets are important, too,” said Cathy Bissell, event co-chair and founder of the BISSELL Pet Foundation. “The community really pulled together to make this our best year yet. We are overwhelmed with appreciation from the outpouring of support. Every year, local sponsors and donors help to make this a unique event, and this year was no different. We’re so thankful for everyone’s generosity.”

Any group in the Greater Grand Rapids area was welcome to apply for a BISSELL Blocktail Grant. On June 27, the BISSELL Blocktail Party Committee met to review the 11 grant applications received from local animal welfare organizations. The committee recognized the importance of all of the applicants’ needs and requests, making it a challenging review process.

The ten “Party Partners” who received a $1,000 donation prior to the event were C-SNIP, Kent County Animal Shelter, Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary, Vicky’s Pet Connection, Humane Society of West Michigan, Carol’s Ferals, Crash’s Landing & Big Sid’s Sanctuary, Focus on Ferals, Reuben’s Room and Safe Haven Humane Society.

Blocktail 2012: The
BEST DOG-GONE Party
in Town

On Wednesday, June 13, the BISSELL Pet Foundation hosted nearly
800 animal lovers and their canine friends, in many shapes and sizes, under picture-perfect skies to raise money and awareness for the homeless pets of West Michigan. The 7th annual BISSELL Blocktail Party® attracted a record breaking crowd on the lawn of Mangiamo!, a Gilmore Collection restaurant located in East Grand Rapids, MI.

The true winners of the evening were the many homeless pets that will benefit from the outpouring of generosity at the successful event. Over $187,000 were raised at this year’s party, surpassing the fundraising goal.

Created and organized by a group of animal advocates with years of combined experience in the animal welfare world, the BISSELL Blocktail Party is touted to be the BEST DOG-GONE Party in Town, and this year’s event lived up to the name. Gourmet “yappetizers” were served to both human and canine guests alike,

as the like-minded animal lovers mingled and contemplated over which unique, silent auction items to bid on. Top hits in this year’s auction included artist Dale Rogers’ American Dog sculptures, a week-long stay at a beach front condo in Jaco, Costa Rica and a hot air balloon ride for two, just to name a few.

New to this year’s event was a Photo Booth opportunity for guests and their pooches, provided by TerpstraPhoto.com. The booth was a hit, with a constant stream of guests waiting for their turn to dress up their dog in fun costumes and props and have their photo snapped at no charge.

After the last drink was served and the auction was closed, it was obvious that the true winners of the evening were the many homeless pets that would benefit from the outpouring of generosity at the successful event. Over $187,000 were raised at this year’s party, surpassing the fundraising goal of $150,000. All proceeds will benefit local animal welfare organizations through BISSELL Blocktail Grants. The BISSELL Pet Foundation received grant applications from 11 local animal welfare organizations before the June 1 deadline, and awards will be announced in the coming weeks.
