Prevention Is the Promise: Why Spay and Neuter Is the Most Powerful Thing We Do
At BISSELL Pet Foundation, we believe the fastest way to empty a shelter is to keep animals from ending up there in the first place. That belief has a name. It is called prevention, and it is the heart of everything we do.
Spay and neuter is not a side program for us. It is the strategy. Every surgery we fund is a decision that ripples forward for years. One spay today prevents a litter this season, then the litters those animals would have gone on to have, and the ones after that. The math does not simply add. It multiplies. And when you sustain that effort in the same community, year after year, something remarkable happens. Fewer animals arrive at the shelter. Fewer families are forced to surrender pets they can no longer care for. Fewer lives are lost simply because there was no room. The suffering that never happens is the quietest victory there is, and it is the one we are most proud of.
Last year alone, our Fix the Future® spay and neuter program funded 211,000 surgeries. This year, we are working to reach somewhere between 230,000 and 250,000. Those are not just figures on a page. Each one is a life spared, a litter prevented, a kennel that stays open for the animal who truly needs it.
Fix the Future is the nation’s largest prevention program, and we run it at the lowest cost of any program our size. That efficiency matters, because it means every dollar reaches further and saves more lives. And we have found a formula that works. We partner with the shelters and communities that need us most, deliver high volume spay and neuter at a very low cost, and stay long enough for the results to compound. When we do, we do not simply relieve a shelter for a season. We change the trajectory of an entire community, and we give the shelters at its heart the room to save even more lives. But reaching further still takes resources.
There are towns and counties across this country where a low cost spay and neuter clinic simply does not exist, where the nearest option is hours away or out of reach entirely. Those are exactly the places where a sustained program can change everything, and those are the communities we want to reach next. We are ready to be there. What we need is the support to make it possible.
Here is what makes this foundation different. One hundred percent of every donation goes directly into lifesaving work. Every penny. Not overhead, not administration, but surgeries, clinics, and the animals themselves. When you give to BISSELL Pet Foundation, you are funding the actual work, all of it.
This is big. It is bigger than any single year and bigger than any one organization. But we have seen with our own eyes what sustained, community-wide spay and neuter can do, and we are more determined than ever to bring it to the places that need it most. We just cannot do it alone. If you believe, as we do, that the most humane thing we can do is prevent suffering before it begins, then we invite you to stand with us.
Together, we can reach more communities, fund more surgeries, and save more lives than ever before.
That is the promise of prevention. That is the work. And with your help, we are only getting started.
