To permanently end the homeless pet problem, everyone across the country needs to understand that there are beautiful, worthy animals in shelters who should be the first choice when bringing a pet into your home. You will get the most loving pet who will literally change your life because it’s so grateful to be loved. I want every person to know they can be part of the solution if they adopt a shelter pet.”
-Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation
As 2019 comes to an end, BPF is proud to have awarded over $2 million in grant funding this year, impacting more homeless pets across the U.S. and Canada. If you follow our work, you know that BPF’s grant funding encompasses adoption, spay/neuter, microchipping and emergency support. BPF prioritizes funding for adoption through its Empty the Shelters adoption events, so pets find loving homes. BPF’s Empty the Shelters events have found homes for nearly 27,000 pets since the program’s inception in 2016.
On December 14, BPF is aiming to bring holiday hope to homeless pets across America with its last Empty the Shelters adoption event of the year. By promoting adoption and offering reduced-fee pet adoptions at 120 locations across 25 states, BPF will help more pets find their forever families this holiday season. Mirroring the foundation’s pillars, all adoptable pets will be microchipped and spayed/neutered.
Since some shelters have higher success with a two-day event, or a free adoption rather than a reduced-fee, each participating organization is able to determine the parameters that will help the most pets in their area. Please be reminded that adopting a pet is a long-term commitment and some shelters have specific preapproval requirements that help ensure the right pet is matched with the right family. To see a list of all participating locations, hours of operation and adoption requirements, visit our ETS page.
Big, fee-waived adoption events are how we relieve pressure at animal shelters. There is no data-supported, efficacy-based argument against these lifesaving adoption events, data shows the animals go to great homes and stay there. Isn’t it amazing when the right thing to do collides with the scientifically-proven best practice? Empty the Shelters saves lives, saves money, and builds communities we can be proud of…
