Giving Pets as Gifts: A Holiday Myth Debunked
Every year, as the holidays approach, the debate resurfaces—should pets be given as gifts? It’s a conversation that stirs strong feelings, much like the myths that once surrounded adopting out black cats in October or waiving adoption fees at shelters. But here’s the truth: those myths have been thoroughly debunked. When done thoughtfully and responsibly, giving a pet as a gift can lead to a lifetime of love and companionship.
The ASPCA looked at this question back in 2013 and found something surprising—pets given as gifts were actually less likely to be relinquished. The key, of course, is intention and understanding. Giving a kitten to your neighbor you barely know isn’t a great idea. But if someone you love has been longing for a furry companion and is ready to care for it responsibly, or if your family has been dreaming about adding a new member and is prepared for the commitment, adopting a pet together can be one of the most meaningful gifts imaginable.
Before you begin your search, please keep in mind that our nation’s animal shelters are full—brimming with pets of every shape, size and personality waiting for a home. From guinea pigs to mastiffs, there’s a perfect match for nearly every family. And when you adopt from a shelter, you’re not just saving a life—you’re also making a smart financial choice.
BISSELL Pet Foundation recently surveyed 380 shelters across the country about their adoption fees. The average fee at a municipal (government-run) shelter is just $84, while private shelters average around $118. These fees typically include spay/neuter surgery and vaccinations—services that would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars. By comparison, purchasing a pet from a breeder or pet store can range from $500 to $2,000, not including spay/neuter, which can add another $300 to $1,000, depending on where you live.
This holiday season, if your heart is open and your home is ready, visit your local animal shelter. Somewhere behind those kennel doors or cozy small-animal enclosures, your family’s next best friend is waiting—a true gift of love, loyalty and joy that will last for years to come.
