Access to Veterinary Care Is a National Crisis

Rising costs, a national shortage of veterinarians, and long wait times mean families often struggle to get timely care for their pets. With limited options for affordable care when they need it, too many pets go without the services necessary to stay healthy and at home.

Animal shelters are experiencing an increase in intake as veterinary expenses force some families to make heartbreaking surrender decisions, and they are searching for community-based solutions. To address this nationwide crisis, BISSELL Pet Foundation and the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation have partnered to create Duffield Pet Wellness Days.

Our Mission

Duffield Pet Wellness Days, a BISSELL Pet Foundation initiative, is dedicated to transforming pet health. This partnership will bring preventive veterinary care directly to the pets who need it most, in shelters, under-resourced communities and beyond. 
 
Through vaccination, medical evaluation, and access to trusted veterinary support, we bridge the gap between pets and care. Our mission is to build a healthier future for animals, reduce suffering before it begins, and strengthen the animal human connection in every community we serve.

How It Works

  • Creates Veterinary Partnerships: We contract with veterinarians nationwide and match them with animal shelters to expand access to essential care. 
  • Provides Vital Shelter Support: Wellness services are delivered directly within animal shelters. 
  • Ensures Community Access: Veterinarians focus their efforts on vaccines and wellness clinics to serve pets in communities across the nation. 
  • Keeps Pets in Homes: By removing barriers to care, we support shelters and help prevent surrenders caused by financial hardship.

Join Duffield Pet Wellness Days – Bringing Care Where It’s Needed Most

Duffield Pet Wellness Days, an initiative of BISSELL Pet Foundation, is dedicated to supporting shelters and communities by delivering access to veterinary care where it matters most. Through Shelter Wellness, Community Wellness, and Street Vet efforts, we’re making a measurable difference for pets and the people who love them. 

And we need you to make it happen. 

How It Works

  • Access to Care: Provide wellness services for shelter pets and community-owned pets. 
  • Compensation: Veterinarians are paid an hourly rate directly by BISSELL Pet Foundation, with the expectation that pets scheduled by the Host Organization receive all approved general wellness care. 
  • Scheduling: Share your availability and the states where you hold licenses. If you’re not already matched with a Host Organization, we’ll pair you with one. 
  • Travel: When travel is required, the Host Organization covers associated costs unless otherwise arranged. We prioritize assignments close to home whenever possible to minimize expenses. 
  • Deployment Details: Before each assignment, you’ll receive a confirmation email outlining pet population, medical protocols, and Host Organization expectations. This ensures you have everything you need and an open line for questions.

Duffield Pet Wellness Days was created to support shelters and communities by expanding access to essential veterinary wellness services where they are needed most. Through Shelter Wellness, Community Wellness, and Street Vet efforts, we help remove barriers to care for pets nationwide. To succeed, we rely on strong Host Organization partners like you.  

Below is an overview of participation requirements. 

How It Works

  • Approved and onboarded Host Organizations are matched with a Duffield Pet Wellness Days contracted veterinarian. 
  • Veterinarians provide all approved general wellness care to the Host Organization’s selected population (shelter pets or community-owned pets). 
  • BISSELL Pet Foundation pays the contracted veterinarian directly for approved wellness days. 

Host Organization Responsibilities

Before Duffield Pet Wellness Days Services are Provided

  • Identify your community’s wellness needs and determine service location and dates. 
  • Notify the BISSELL Pet Foundation team at PetWellness@BISSELL.com so we can secure a contracted wellness veterinarian for your event. 
  • If you have a veterinarian in mind, please let us know—we’re happy to explore that option. 

During a Duffield Pet Wellness Day

  • All services must be provided free of charge to pet parents. 
  • Host Organizations are responsible for collecting pet parent information using the BPF-provided sign-in form. 

After Duffield Pet Wellness Days

  • Host Organizations must submit a Monthly Host Organization Wellness Report through BPF’s online portal. 
  • This reporting allows our team to track reach, measure impact, and ensure the program continues to meet community needs.
